| WORKABLE WORKS FOR RORIE |
|
Rorie from Kircubbin joined the Workable (NI) Programme in June 2007. Rorie has cerebral palsy, which affects his verbal communication and had been referred to USEL by Pathways Work Preparation team leader, Yvonne Loney.
The Workable (NI) Programme provides people with disabilities with individual tailored support and guidance to help them find and retain suitable employment.
Support includes job search guidance, job trainer or job coach support, on and off the job training and access to practical advice.
A support package is also agreed between the employee, employer and USEL for a two-year period but may be extended depending on the employee’s individual needs.
When Rorie joined Workable (NI) he was actively seeking permanent employment. Rorie was assigned to USEL’s Employment Services Officer, Colin Reid, who worked closely with him to assist him in his job search.
As Rorie was keen to develop his skills within an administrative environment he applied for an administration assistant position with Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) and was successful in securing the position with the support of Colin.
Colin met with NICS to explain more about the nature of Rorie’s disability and his ability to fulfil the requirements of the position.
Rorie has now been employed by NICS for over a year and is presently on the waiting list to be promoted to Administrative Officer when a vacancy arises.
Rories manager, Neville Brown commented “Rorie has proved himself to be an asset to the organisation and we commend the assistance provided by USEL in helping him settle into the organisation”.
Colin is in regular contact with Rorie and provides ongoing support to both employee and employer to ensure any problems are resolved and encourage his progression to unsupported employment.
Rories’ participation on the Workable (NI) Programme has allowed him to overcome significant barriers to employment, increase his confidence and secure permanent paid employment.
Rorie commented, “Without the support of USEL I would have faced considerable difficulties in gaining full time employment. The support provided to me on the Workable (NI) Programme has been invaluable”.
