| WORK PREPARATION PROGRAMME HELPS WILLIAM RETURN TO WORK |

William from Newtownabbey joined the Pathways Work Preparation Programme in April 2008. Unemployed for several years due to ill health William was keen to return to employment.
The Work Preparation programme was introduced to help people on incapacity benefits return to the workplace. It is an important part of the Pathways to Work initiative, which helps people with health conditions and disabilities consider their options for returning to work.
The twelve-week programme includes work preparation training in a group setting followed by the opportunity to take part in a work experience placement within a sector chosen by the participant.
As William had previously worked within a stores and warehousing environment he was keen to gain the relevant experience that would further develop his employment skills and abilities.During his work placement William was employed as a General Assistant in grocery store replenishment in local supermarket, Iceland.
Through his participation on the Work Preparation Programme William was able to develop his team working and customer service skills, increase his confidence and self-esteem and return to a structured work routine.
William commented “Through the Work Preparation Programme I have regained my confidence and now feel ready to return to work”.
William’s progression and commitment were recognised by his employer as Ross Scott, Store Manager of Iceland commented, “William’s work performance has been excellent and we would strongly encourage him to apply for future positions within the store”.
William’s participation on the Work Preparation Programme has enabled him to return to the workplace after a long period of unemployment.
Additionally, through the programme, he has been able to gain relevant accredited employment related qualifications, increase his confidence and develop his employment skills.
