| DAVID SECURES PERMANENT EMPLOYMENT THROUGH WORK PREP |
|
David from Fermanagh registered with USEL in December 2007. David had been employed as a joiner for twenty years, however suffered from ill health and was advised to seek alternative employment by his family doctor.
David was assigned to USEL’s Employment Services Officer, Siobhan Quinn, who worked closely with him to provide him with advice on his employment options.
As David had a keen interest in golf and was a member of his local golf club he expressed interest in pursuing employment as a greenkeeper in his club. As David had no previous experience within this field
Siobhan registered him for the Work Preparation programme which helps people with health related conditions and disabilities return to work.
The twelve-week programme provides participants with the opportunity to take part in a work experience placement within a sector chosen by the participant and is designed to develop work skills and self-confidence.
Siobhan sourced a suitable placement in the club and during his work placement David was employed as greenkeeper. Throughout the programme Siobhan provided ongoing support to David and visited him on a weekly basis.
The Work Preparation programme enabled David to learn new skills, gain the relevant work experience and also develop the confidence to return to full time employment. Upon completion of the 12-week placement David continued to work in a voluntary capacity at the club.
Siobhan was in regular contact with David to provide the practical advice and support he needed to return to permanent employment. When a vacancy arose for part-time green keeper in the golf club Siobhan helped David prepare his CV and develop his interview skills.
David was appointed to part-time position within the club. A full-time vacancy occurred 10 weeks later and David was successful in securing the permanent position of full-time greenkeeper at the club.
David has tremendous praise for the assistance provided by USEL. David commented “Without the help and support from USEL I would not be in my present occupation. I was provided with ongoing assistance and guidance which has enabled me to return to full-time employment”.
