Gary began work through USEL’s delivery of DEL’s Workable (NI) scheme in April 2007. This programme provides appropriate supports to assist disabled people find and keep paid work within open employment environments. Gary had never held a full time job, but had an aspiration to enter the work place. On first meeting his Employment Officer he was unsure of exactly what he wanted to do. However he did like the concept of working outside.
USEL placed Gary with a local firm in Larne to help him gain experience and see if he wished to work full time with the company. He did enjoy some aspects of the job, however he did not feel that this was what he wished to work at long term. Gary admitted that the experience gave him the confidence to seek out other jobs, and he secured an interview with The Landscape Centre.
A USEL Employment Officer met with the Landscape Centre to present the Workable (NI) programme as a possible employment option that would offer support to the employer and would assist develop Gary’s skills and his integration into the workplace. Gary was also supported through the interview process, where he was competing against a number of other applicants. He successfully secured the role and is now working as a gardening team member, travelling to various sites around NI.
Gary said he is thrilled with the job and feels he is part of the team, he states, 'I really enjoy the job, and am glad that USEL have helped me with it.'
Gary's twin brother Jason is also employed and supported by USEL in another employment programme.
