The successful implementation of policies regarding health and safety at the workplace and risk prevention constitutes a major challenge for companies and businesses. However, in spite of the regulatory and implementation advances made in this field, the current legislation does not tackle with sufficient thoroughness the issues presented by workers with disabilities, who may encounter particular difficulties at work due physical, biological, and environmental conditions and to the specific risks that arise from these conditions.

This CDROM was developed as a result of work co-funded by the European Agency for Health and Safety and the ONCE Foundation, in collaboration with the Fundosa Group and USEL. The partnership undertook an ambitious European project that wished to contribute to alleviate the lack of specificity when it comes to health and safety at work for people with disabilities. The project worked to develop a complete Occupational Health and Safety Management System, suitable for SME’s, with special emphasis on workers with disabilities, thus contributing to improvements in their quality of working lives and therefore advancing fuller integration in society.

The Occupational Health and Safety Management System entitled “Safety and Health at Work for People with Disabilities” was developed between November of 2003 and September of 2004 and is based on OSHA 18001 regulations.

The Management System can be used in its entirety to address all aspects of health and safety in the workplace for people with disabilities, or used in stages to implement or improve safe working practices and procedures as best suit the organisation.
