USEL (Ulster Supported Employment Ltd) is a registered charity and also hold a Non-Departmental Public Body Status. The organisation was established in 1962, originally to provide supported employment for disabled people within its manufacturing base. In 1982 The Workshops for the Blind was incorporated into USEL making the organisation the largest employer of disabled people within Northern Ireland. The organisation also supports disabled people in paid employment with over 360 employers at over 470 locations.


The organisation aims to further promote the work abilities of disabled people through the activities and programmes operated by the Company. For USEL the year of 2001 was momentous with the publication of a positive Training and Employment Agency led Quinquennial Review together with a positive economic appraisal recommending the relocation of the organisation, which occurred in June 2001. USEL was also successful in its bid to deliver the New Deal for Disabled People. Recently in partnership with the Shankill Open Learning Centre the Company successfully acquired a number of European grants to further enhance the training and development needs of its employees.
